Most electrical fires and failures on boats do not arrive without warning. They follow months of a loose connection warming slightly on every use, a chafed cable rubbing a little further through, or a bilge pump fuse quietly bypassed with wire because the correct size was not to hand. A short seasonal routine catches the majority of these before they become expensive or dangerous.
None of the checks below require dismantling the boat, and most take an afternoon. Where a check reveals something beyond a simple fix, that is the point to call a marine electrician rather than push on.
Work through accessible wiring runs looking for chafe against sharp edges or moving parts, discolouration or a warm smell near terminals which points to a loose or corroded connection, and any cable insulation that has gone brittle or cracked. Green or white powdery deposits on a terminal mean corrosion is already reducing the connection's capacity.
Pay particular attention to any cable passing through a bulkhead or locker lid without a grommet, and to connections made with twisted wire and electrical tape rather than proper marine terminals. Both are common causes of intermittent faults and localised overheating.
Check that batteries are still firmly secured against movement, that terminals are clean and tight, and that any lead-acid or AGM battery has adequate ventilation to the outside since these can vent hydrogen during charging. A battery that has shifted, even slightly, is a sign the securing arrangement needs attention before it works loose further.
Look for terminal covers on positive posts. An exposed positive terminal near a metal tool, bilge water or a dropped spanner is one of the most common causes of a dead short and a subsequent fire on board.
Check the panel for any breaker that trips repeatedly, any fuse holder showing heat discolouration, and any circuit where a fuse of the wrong rating has been fitted, often visible from a mismatched or improvised fuse. A breaker that will not stay reset, or a fuse that blows again immediately after replacement, indicates a fault downstream and should not simply be fitted with a heavier fuse to make it stop tripping.
Test that the main battery isolator switches operate freely and fully isolate the circuit, and that any emergency shutoffs for the engine or bilge system are clearly labelled and reachable.
Inspect the shore power lead for damage to the outer sheath, and check both the boat inlet and the pontoon connector for scorching or pitting on the pins, a sign of a poor connection running hot. Test any onboard RCD using its test button and confirm it trips promptly.
If the boat does not have RCD protection on the AC system, this is worth treating as a priority fix rather than a nice-to-have. It is the single device most likely to prevent a fatal shock if a fault develops in an appliance or the wiring.
Safety-critical circuits deserve their own check separate from the general electrical survey. Run the bilge pump on its float switch to confirm automatic operation, not just manual override, and test gas and carbon monoxide alarms if fitted. A bilge pump that only works on the manual switch will not save the boat while you are ashore.
Check that the bilge pump circuit has its own dedicated fuse or breaker close to the battery, sized correctly for the pump and cable, and that this connection has not been made directly to the battery without protection on the mistaken assumption that a fuse could compromise the pump's availability. An unprotected cable fault is a fire risk regardless of how important the circuit is.
Note down what you find each season, even briefly: which terminals were cleaned, which fuse was replaced, what the RCD test result was. A written record makes it much easier to spot a developing pattern, a terminal that keeps needing attention, a breaker that trips more often than it used to, before it becomes a failure.
This record is also useful to hand to a surveyor or to a marine electrician if you do call one in, since it shows what has already been checked and narrows down where a fault is likely to have developed since the last inspection.
A full check at the start of the season, with a quick visual and functional check before any significant passage, catches most developing problems.
