A general condition survey covers electrics at a level appropriate to a generalist. Where a boat has a substantial DC system, an inverter installation, lithium, or years of added circuits, a dedicated electrical inspection tells you far more about what you are taking on.

What is inspected

The aim is a documented picture of the installation's condition and compliance, not a list of cosmetic complaints.

• Distribution, protection devices and their ratings against the circuits they serve
• Cable type, sizing, support and condition, including hidden runs where accessible
• Battery banks, securing, ventilation, fusing and charge sources
• AC installation, earthing arrangements and protective devices
• Navigation, communication and safety-critical circuits
• Evidence of undocumented modification

The findings that carry the most weight

Missing or wrongly rated overcurrent protection, unsupported or corroded cable in inaccessible places, and AC earthing irregularities matter far more than untidy cable ties. They are also the ones that cost the most to put right after purchase.

Using the report

A written report with photographs gives you three options: negotiate on price, ask for remedial work before completion, or walk away with a clear reason. It also becomes the baseline record for the boat if you do buy.

Sellers increasingly commission the same inspection to head off surprises during a buyer's survey, and to evidence that recent electrical work was done to standard.
