Finding why a circuit fails when other equipment is used

If instruments restart with the windlass, or lighting changes when a pump operates, note the relationship without repeatedly forcing the fault. Shared connections and voltage drop may be involved, but testing is needed before naming the cause. The fault might lie in the return path as well as the positive supply.

Adding equipment without losing track of the installation

Victron charging and monitoring, chartplotters, radar, AIS and instruments all depend on appropriate supply and cable routes. A new piece of equipment should not be attached to an unidentified spare wire because it reaches the right locker. Its requirements and the condition of the existing circuit need checking.

Panel work and partial rewiring can also be useful where several additions have left the arrangement hard to follow. The aim is to make it clear what each circuit does and how to switch it off safely, not merely improve the appearance of the front panel. Access behind linings and beneath the sole should be discussed before the fitting is planned.

Reporting shore-power symptoms safely

If shore power trips, describe whether it happens on connection or when a particular appliance is switched on. Do not bypass an RCD or improvise another connection to keep the boat supplied. Mains faults can present a shock risk even when the boat’s battery-powered equipment appears normal.
