Marine Switch Panel and Distribution Panel Upgrades

The switch panel is where every circuit on the boat starts. On an older boat it is often the most crowded, most modified and least documented part of the system. We replace and upgrade marine switch panels and fuse panels, re-terminate the circuits behind them and leave a labelled panel you can actually read, with a written quote agreed first.

A boat electrical panel does two jobs: it switches each circuit and it protects it, with a fuse or breaker sized to the cable. Over years of added equipment, panels fill up, spare ways get doubled up and new circuits are taken straight from the battery with an inline fuse, so the panel stops telling the whole story.

Upgrading the panel is a good moment to sort that out. It often goes hand in hand with a partial or full rewire, because the cables arriving at the back of the panel are usually the ones that need attention.

Signs a boat fuse panel needs replacing

Panels rarely fail outright. More often they become unreliable or unsafe in small ways, and those signs are worth acting on before a circuit lets you down at sea.

Choosing a new marine switch panel

The choice comes down to the number of circuits now and in future, breakers or fuses, and the space available. Circuit breakers can be reset after a trip and double as switches; blade fuses are compact and inexpensive. Either way each circuit is protected to suit its cable. Some boats benefit from splitting the panel, keeping navigation and electronics on one section and domestic loads on another, or from adding a separate AC panel where shore power or an inverter feeds 230V circuits.

What a distribution panel upgrade involves

Before the old panel comes out, each circuit is identified and tested so nothing is lost in the changeover. The new panel is mounted, cables are re-terminated with marine-grade connections, a proper positive and negative bus arrangement is fitted where needed, and anything wired straight to the battery is brought back through the panel where sensible. Every way is labelled, and you get a record of what is on each circuit.

Panel upgrades during a refit

If the boat is coming out for a refit, plan the panel at the same time as new electronics, batteries or charging. Access is easier, the circuit list can be designed once, and the new panel can be sized with spare ways for what you may add later. It also means the labelling and circuit record cover the whole boat at once, rather than a panel that is tidy at the front and still confusing behind.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace my boat electrical panel without a full rewire?

Often, yes. If the cables are in good condition the panel can be replaced on its own. If the testing shows tired cabling, we will explain what should be renewed and why.

Breakers or fuses on a boat switch panel?

Both protect the circuit when correctly sized. Breakers can be reset and used as switches; fuses are compact. The right choice depends on the boat and the circuits.

Can you add circuits for new equipment?

Yes. Part of the upgrade is leaving spare protected ways so new electronics or lighting can be added cleanly later.

Will the panel be labelled?

Yes. Every circuit is labelled, and you get a written record of what each way feeds.
