A battery bank that never reaches full charge is rarely a battery problem on its own. In most cases the charge source, the path between the source and the bank, or the way the system is configured is at fault — and each of those leaves different symptoms.
This guide sets out the order we work through on board, so you can narrow the cause before anyone lifts a floorboard.
Most boats have more than one way of putting energy into the bank: shore power through a mains charger, the engine alternator, and often solar. Testing them one at a time is the only reliable way to isolate a fault.
Panel meters and app readouts are often taken from a different point in the circuit than the battery terminals. A voltage drop across a corroded terminal, an undersized cable run or a tired isolator can look exactly like a weak charger.
Measuring directly at the posts while charging, then again at the charge source output, shows immediately whether the energy is being lost on the way.
Lead-acid, AGM, gel and LiFePO4 all want different absorption voltages and different behaviour at the end of charge. A charger left on a default lead-acid profile will chronically undercharge a lithium bank, and an aggressive profile will cook an AGM bank.
On mixed installations this is one of the most common causes of a bank that seems to lose capacity over a season.
Standing draws — bilge pump circuits, alarms, inverters left in standby, fridge thermostats — can quietly cancel out a modest charge current. A shunt-based monitor showing true amps in and amps out settles this quickly and is worth fitting on any boat with a serious house bank.
It can. A failed cell pulls the pack voltage down so the charger sees a bank that never reaches its absorption target, and the healthy batteries in parallel get dragged with it. Individual battery testing is the way to confirm.
Resting voltage tells you very little about capacity. A bank with heavy sulphation or lost cells can read normally at rest and collapse the moment a load is applied. A load or capacity test gives the real answer.
Not usually as a first step. Standard alternators are limited by their regulator far more often than by output rating, and upgrading without addressing regulation, cable size and battery acceptance rarely delivers what owners expect.
In a parallel bank, yes — mixing a new battery with older ones means the new unit is quickly pulled down to the condition of the weakest.
