A shunt-based monitor counts energy in and out, which is the measurement that matters.
A shunt is a precision resistor placed in the bank's negative return, so every amp entering or leaving the bank passes through it. The monitor measures the tiny voltage across it and integrates that over time to track state of charge.
Because it sits in the main negative, installation position matters: anything connected on the wrong side of the shunt is invisible to the monitor.
